Making a Toilet Paper Holder with a Phone Stand
Watch the 4 minute video or read on for step by step instructions on making your own fancy toilet paper holder!
We started out by cutting to length one inch (1”) square steel tubing using our angle grinder.
This piece will be used as the wall bracket that mounts against the wall and also holds the shelf and toilet paper roll holder rod.
Using the bandsaw, we cut one face off the square steel tube to make a “C” channel. You can just buy a C channel steel to skip this step, but we had scrap square tubing to use for this project.
Using the drill press, we drilled two (2) holes on the face opposite the opening to use as mounting holes to the wall and two (2) holes on the adjacent face to secure the wood shelf shown in the steps below
We used a 120grit flap disc on our angle grinder to deburr the holes and clean the mill scale off the steel.
Now that the wall bracket is complete, we sketched a simple holder design on some scrap plywood.
We added screws along the inside profile of the design to use as anchoring points to bend the aluminum rod.
Using a ¼” aluminum rod, we clamped one end to the fixture and bent the rod around the screws making sure to align with the shape.
We drilled out a coupling nut so the aluminum rod can slide through without binding then hammered the end of the aluminum rod so the mushroom head can keep it from sliding off the coupling nut.
We then welded the assembly to the mounting bracket we made earlier.
Using our miter saw, we cut a piece of walnut to length. It was about three inches wide, eight inches long, and one inch thick.
We applied sealer wax to the walnut and spray painted clear coat on the steel mounting bracket.
We like the modern look of the raw steel against the dark wood.
To install we first screw the mounting bracket to the wall.
Then the wood shelf slides and and screws secure from the bottom.
Voila! A fancy toilet paper holder to wow all your bathroom guests. The shelf is handy for holding phones, candles, potpourri - whatever you want! The slip on toilet paper holder is a LIFE CHANGER for those who hate changing the TP.
