DIY Plywood Lounge Sofa

This lounge sofa was built entirely from plywood as a weekend project. We designed it specifically around a twin-size mattress so it's comfortable to lounge on and easy to use for sleeping too.

Motivation

Our previous couch had a shallow base that only allowed proper lounging on the chaise portion, which didn't fit how we actually used the space. This sofa was designed with deep cushions and plenty of depth to fix that.

Specifications

The dimensions fit either a standard twin or twin XL mattress. Going with twin XL reduces the overhang space on the sides for storing items.

Materials used

5 sheets of plywood (8' x 4' x ¾"), wood glue, 2.5" wood screws, spring clamps, water-based polyurethane finish.

Construction

  1. Base: laminated two plywood sheets together with wood glue and spring clamps
  2. Back support: cut a 21" wide piece with a 15-degree bevel from one sheet
  3. Back rests: cut 20" x 16" pieces (CNC-cut, or a downloadable pattern for jigsaw cutting)
  4. Legs: built from 30 pieces stacked and glued layer by layer, reinforced with a brad nailer
  5. Finishing: sanded to 220 grit and finished with water-based polyurethane
  6. Assembly: secured the legs to the base with 2.5" wood screws
  7. Upholstery: covered the mattress with custom upholstery fabric and added IKEA pillows
